Hudson County Man Who Struck 2 Pedestrians Was DUI, Prosecutor Says

A 37-year-old North Bergen man was under the influence of drugs when he struck two pedestrians with his car last year in Jersey City, authorities said.

Lawrence Smith was arrested Monday morning in connection with the Nov. 23, 2019 incident, that injured a 50-year-old woman and her 22-year-old son, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office said.

Smith was headed south on Summit Avenue in a 2003 Chevrolet Impala when he hit the woman and her son in the marked crosswalk at Sherman Place around 11:30 p.m., Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.

The woman was unresponsive at the scene and taken to Jersey City Medical Center with serious bodily injuries while her son was taken to the same hospital with minor injuries.

Smith, who was also charged with driving without a valid driver's license causing serious bodily injury, remained at the scene.

He was arrested at the prosecutor's office without incident and taken to the Hudson County Jail in Kearny.
